Paul opted not to go on the boat ride (on a very small boat) out to Prison Island, he tends to get sea sick in small boats. The boat left from a beach (short wade to the boat). The guy with the large tray...those are sunglasses in the tray...looking for customers.
Boat ride to the island. Zanzibar City in the background.
Approaching Prison Island.
Some buildings were built on the island to turn it into a prison but instead it became a quarantine area.
Saw a most interesting bird with a very long tail while wandering the prison grounds. Turns out is was an African Paradise Flycatcher.
The island is mainly known for their large population of Aldabra tortoises. These tortoises are from the Seychelles and some of were brought here as a satellite breeding area.
One area was formerly a hotel. The pool was still filled with water. This would make a great place for a luxury boutique hotel.
More of the island.
On the way back Mary got a small glimpse of Sand Island in the distance. It is only visible at low tide.
Then it was off on the road...
to our beach hotel, Zuri, on the northern end of the island. Beautiful grounds, lovely buildings and great beach. Our "room" was a beautiful bungalow with outdoor shower (we had one inside also) and a large balcony/patio with chairs and hammock. Life doesn't get much better.
