1) Naming Conventions - All of our guides and drivers have had English names (except one, whose names was Miel - French for Honey). We asked our first guide if the guides adopted English names for the sake of tourist (they did that in China when we were there...when they start studying to be a tour guide they are assigned an English name or perhaps French or Spanish or other if they will be guiding in those languages).
Francis said no, that when they are born they are given an English name as their Christian/Church name with the middle name being one from their tribe. Hence we have had Francis, Isaac, Harlequin, Kevin, Sammy, Samuel as our guides as well as meeting many other people with English names.
2) Climate - all of the countries we have visited are pretty much right along the equator. One would think it would be hot here. One would be wrong. Much (but not all) of where we have visited has been at 5,000 feet altitude or higher. It has been pretty chilly at times and definitely never hot (tomorrow we go to the Maasai Mara so we'll find out if it is hot there – although it is also above 5,000 feet). Fortunately we both brought a light raincoat as well as long sleeved shirts so we aren’t toooo cold.
Pretty much everywhere we have been they have commented about how the climate is changing and it seems to be getting cooler and in some places raining more...hence the overflowing lakes in Kenya.
